Castro CBD Collaborates with City to Implement Pededstrian Plaza at 17th , Castro and Market Streets On May 13, 2009 the Castro celebrated the opening of the long awaited pedestrian plaza where 17th Street meets Castro and Market Streets. Discussed in the community for about ten (10) years, the idea for closing the street to traffic was one of the top priorities in the Castro CBD’s Neighborhood Beautification and Safety Plan. During the winter of 2009, the City identified this space as its first trial, “Pavement to Parks” projects and began working closely with the Castro CBD on implementing the plaza. Designs were drawn and redrawn, presented at community meetings, first responders and checked for all safety issues. Construction of the temporary began in the spring of 2009. (see gallery photos of 17th St. Plaza). The plaza was an immediate success in the neighborhood, offering people a place to sit outside to have coffee, socialize and people watch. So successful has this plaza been that in the winter of 2010 plans were developed to transform this temporary space into a permanent fixture in the community.

Pedestrian Plaza for 17th St. at Castro-Market New plazas are part of both the Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District’s "Neighborhood Beautification and Safety Plan", and the Upper Market Community Design Plan led by our District 8 S.F. Supervisor Bevan Dufty and developed by the City’s Planning Department. Both studies call for more public spaces to make the area more attractive and welcoming for pedestrians while respecting the needs for good vehicle traffic flow and parking. Creation of a pedestrian plaza at 17th Street and Castro/Market Streets ranked high in the recommendations from both studies. It has since received widespread endorsement from area residents and businesses.
