Welcome Tourists to the Neighborhood
Become a Castro Ambassador!

The Castro Ambassadors are volunteers who welcome visitors from across the globe to the Castro. Castro Ambassadors provide a friendly smile and a hello, offering visitors information, to take their picture or suggestions for a favorite place for lunch. They have a unique opportunity to interact with visitors casually or in more detail. Sometimes talking to a Castro Ambassador is the most memorable part of a tourists’ trip to San Francisco!

The program asks for a 4-hour commitment a month between May – October. Ambassadors are trained and equipped with a walking map of the district and other handouts in multiple languages. New ambassadors will be paired up with seasoned ambassadors for the first several shifts.  If you are interested in becoming a Castro Ambassador or if you have any questions about this program please contact the Castro Community Benefit District by emailing Andrea Aiello, Executive Director at execdirector@castrocbd.org or call 415-500-1181.

Castro Ambassadors change the world!

A Castro Ambassador helped a British family with young children understand the history of the Castro and directed them to important civic sites in the neighborhood. They wrote a beautiful letter of thanks:

I found my ability to talk with my children about LGBTQ history and current events was extremely positively impacted by actually being in the Castro and having the resources from the Ambassadors. Having gay heroes publicly celebrated was extremely meaningful. We had a brilliant time and the children have been talking about our visit often since.  I’ve overheard one of them putting a friend right about the legality of gay marriage and we’ve had a lot of “big” discussions resulting from our visit to the part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt displayed in Catch on Market.

Thanks again, and warmest wishes,

Elisabeth
